In 1975 Umberto Pineschi, organist of the Cathedral of Pistoia, founded an association with the purpose of promoting the knowledge and the study of the Italian organ and its literature, particularly in connection with the Pistoiese school. The association took as its symbol the Willem Hermans organ (1664) of the church of Spirito Santo and was named Accademia di Musica Italiana per Organo (Academy of Italian Organ Music). In 2001 it was given a new title, Accademia d'organo Giuseppe Gherardeschi (Giuseppe Gherardeschi Organ Academy).
